This memorial gives area residents and other visitors visiting the New Bethlehem Parklet a chance to reflect on that devastating evening of July 19, 1996, in which the nearby Piney Dam crested its banks, combined with excessive rainfall for the year, Redbank Creek overflowed its banks, washing away eight bridges as well as the dam.
This natural disaster caused several millions of dollars in damage, including at the local high school, which was in the process of renovations at the time, left classrooms and hallways in four feet of standing water. Students could not return to the next school term for several weeks later.
One of the most important things of this disaster is that the community put forth the effort and brought the community back more than ever.
