When English speaking people hear the word "Fuji" they automatically think of Mt. Fuji. Fuji is actually a flower, what we call "Wistaria", in English. In Japanese the kanji (Chinese characters) for Mt. Fuji and the kanji for Fuji (wistaria) are different. This manhole cover is situated in Fujieda City in Shizuoka prefecture. The name Fujieda means "wistaria branch". On this manhole cover the tear drop shop shapes represent the wistaria, Mt. Fuji is clearly seen on the left, the bird is the bush warbler, and in front of the bird are a kidney bean shaped design depicting pine trees. The Japanese characters, located just above the bird, say "Our city, Fujieda". Fujieda City is located about 60km from Mt. Fuji and on a clear day you can see her from many points in the city. Along with the manhole cover I have included a photo of some of the wistaria that Fujieda is famous for. This particular photo, of the wistaria, was taken at a local park during the wistaria season, which is usually from mid-April to mid-May.
