In Boston, at the very southern tip of the peninsula known as Deer Island, is an orientation table that provides a commanding panoramic view of Boston Harbor Islands and the Atlantic Ocean.
The orientation table was put up by the National Park Service, since Deer Island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park and Recreation Area. The area is maintained by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), which has the Deer Island Water Treatment Plant there.
The sign has an artistic rendering of the islands, with callouts to name each island feature, including those that are out in the Atlantic Ocean. Photos are arranged above the callouts, and there are paragraphs for each island or island group.
There is a parking area at the end of Taft Avenue that comes south from Winthrop. You can also reach the island by passenger ferry boat. The entire walking loop is 2.6 miles from the parking lot. It is a lot shorter from the ferry pier.
