This abandoned gold mine is located in the Mt Cootha Forest west of Brisbane city. Nearby, the Mt Cootha lookout is a popular tourist spot for views over the city and suburbs.
Shaft mining occurred on the Ghost hole site in the 1940's. The lease was unsuccessful with little gold being recorded from the mine. In 1959 the claim was repossessed by the local government for unpaid rent.
Today there is an easy trail to the shaft entrance (approx 600m return) with a number of signs outlining its history. Signage indicates there are 2 other shaft entrances off trail. There is no danger warnings so would assume these have been sealed.
Access to the trail is via a carpark at Gold Mine Picnic Area (S 27 28.475 / E 152 56.730).
