Saline Riburg was founded 1848. The facility was rebuilt and modernized in 1973.
The halite deposits are in a depth of about 400 meters under ground, fresh water is pressed in the ground and the saturated brine pumped up. Then the brine is evaporated (heated) and what's left is the salt.
The location Riburg has an output of about 54 ton salt per hour.
The facility includes the central storage buildings for all the salines of the company. Two of them are well-known: the "Saldome" was built 2004/2005, it has a capacity of 80,000 tons salt and was Switzerland largest dome then; in May 2012 the "Saldome2" opened just next to it, it has a storage capacity of over 100,000 tons and is currently Europe's largest dome.
