This flat metal marker commemorates the life of Gilbert O. Ahlman, who sailed on ore freighters on the Great Lakes. He was a member of the Seafarers International Union of North America.
From the Americal Maritime Officer, Vol. 39 issue #12 Dec 2009:
Gilbert Ahlman, who sailed on the Great Lakes with AMO, died Sep 3 2009 at age 93.
AMO is an umbrella organization made up of several maritime-trades-related unions.
According to the Social Security Death Index, Mr. Ahlman died in Maricopa, Arizona.
Whoever applied this elegant and simple memorial to Mr. Ahlman on the sidewalk to the breakwater at Wisconsin Point (and why) is a mystery. Mr. Ahlman must have been well-remembered by friends or deeply emotionally connected to the shipping industry on Lake Superior to be memorialized in this manner, so far from where he lived at the time of his passing.
