a/k/a "Pocket Park"
This small park is nestled in the heart of downtown on the corner of Franklin and Front Streets. There are planter boxes in the middle and around two sides filled with flowers with attached bench type seating and native artwork. A waterfall/watercourse fountain fills in the back and one side.
Signage explains:
Gunakadeit (Goo NA ka date), a legendary Tlingit sea animal who brings good fortune and prosperity to the person or willage who sees it. The legend describes a village struggling to survive difficult times. Gunakadeit became the provider for the village, or its "smile of fortune."
The "smile of fortune" has come to Juneau since settlement by the Tlingit people, in the form of natural resources like fisheries, timber and minerals, as well as tourism and government.
Let Gunakadeit Park always remind us of what we have accomplished and the potential we have as a city.
