This is on red granite. It also lists the commission, design, and consultants that cooperated in the placement of this memorial.
Purple hearts are sometimes posthumous, but not always.
Many soldiers live with continuous evidence of what they sacrificed during combat. The numbers are in the thousands. They were all someone's family.
