The Thunder Bay (Ontario) Main Light has guarded the north breakwater of the Thunder Bay Harbor since 1937.
It is described as a square cylindrical tower and gallery on top of the lighthouse keeper's 2-story dwelling. The lighthouse building is white, trimmed with red. The lens gallery is also red. This is a very cute and photogenic lighthouse.
The lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. It has a fourth order Fresnel lens and flashes a red light every 5 seconds. The lighthouse has a user-activated foghorn that sounds 3 2-second blasts every minute in foggy weather.
The lighthouse is managed by the Canadian Coast Guard. Accessible only by boat, the light is NOT open to the public. It is easily seen from the Thunder Bay waterfront, however.
