The islet is a volcanic cone of hidromagmatic origin, that resulted from an underwater eruption, surtesian type . The islet is now much dismantled by marine erosion, tectonic movements and differential settlement.

Geologically, at a submarine level, the fissures are among the most typical habitats and protected area of greatest interest, especially for underwater wildlife that live in less illuminated places. We are on the presence of a geologicaly / biological place of great interest. Fissures are primarily composed of basaltic rock.

Another distinctive component of this set of rare geological beauty is the Farilhão, a rock 20 m away from the Great islet with 32.5 meters height, crowned by Festuca petraea.

The island is about 500 meters from the coast of Vila Franca do Campo village, and 1200 meters of Tagarete wharf . From Tagarete port there are regular connections with the island during the summer at a price of 4.5 euros per adult (free for children under 10 years old).

Please observe that this islet is classified as natural reserve and is also classified as an Important Bird Areas by the Birdlife International so, it’s not allowed to collect any samples.
