The Robert E Coyle United States Courthouse serves the US District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Eastern District of California, specifically the Fresno Division which hears civil, criminal and miscellaneous actions occuring in the counties of Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne. The judicial staff includes two district court judges, two senior district court judges and three magistrate judges.

The Courthouse is the fourth such facility in Fresno and opened in 2006. There are a total of 11 court rooms with chambers for sitting judges as well as visiting judges, in addition to offices for US Attorneys, Federal Defenders, a California US Senator, and several federal law enforcement agencies. The building was designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects in the Brutalist style of architecture. The 9 story 400,000 sq. ft. building was the dream of Judge Robert Coyle who served as the presiding judge, (I had the pleasure of meeting Judge Coyle during the planning process). It was named for him as he retired from the bench. He has since passed away.
