The destroyer USS Cassin Young was build during World War II at San Pedro, CA by the Bethlehem Steel Company. The ship was commissioned on December 31, 1943 and is named for Commander Cassin Young who was awarded the medal of honor for his actions at Pearl harbor, HI on December 7, 1941. Fletcher-Class destroyers were built between March 1941 and February 1945. They are 367.5 feet in length and carry five five-inch dual purpose guns, ten torpedoes, depth charges and anti-aircraft guns.

The ship saw action in the Pacific Theater as a carrier escort at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, the Philippines and Okinawa, where it survived numerous Kamikaze attacks. For her actions at Okinawa the Cassin Young was awarded the Naval Unit Commendation. After the war she returned to California where she was repaired and placed in the reserve fleet. The USS Cassin Young was decommissioned on May 28, 1946.

The ship was recommissioned on September 7, 1951 for service during the Korean War. In 1952, she was modernized at the Charlestown Navy Shipyard in Boston then sent on four deployments to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. On April 29, 1960 the USS Cassin Young was once again decommissioned and mothballed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia.

Today, the USS Cassin Yound is maintained by the National Park Service and on display at the Charlestown Navy Yard because she is similar to fourteen Fletcher-Class destroyers build in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Visitors are welcome to board the ship and tour the unmodified decks.
