Northern Laos is a land of green, tree-filled hills, of valleys, and long winding roads. Two of the provinces of this region are the province of Luang Prabang and that of (the very difficult to prononce) Xiengkhouang. Linking these two provinces is national highway 7.

At the border there is one large sign welcoming you to the Xiengkhouang province, and a small sign welcoming you to Luang Prabang. The local landscape does not change, nor are there any facilities at the crossing.

Along the road here are small villages, most of these have similarly small markets which sell food to passerbys. Most buses stop at one of these villages for a rest break and for folk to shop for good country fare.

Both these two provinces attract a modicum of tourists. Luang Prabang as its capital (the city of the same name) is a World Heritage Site, and Xiengkhouang as it contains the major megalithic site known as the "Plain of Jars".

These photographs were taken from a moving bus, not the best, however, there is little private travel along these roads and there are difficulties with foreigners renting vehicles, so this is the best it will be for some years to come.
