In de nacht van 21 op 22 mei 1944 stortte in Voortkapel een Lancaster bommenwerper neer waarbij 7 militairen om het leven kwamen.

On the night of may 21-22 1944 a Lancaster bomber was shot down in Voortkapel. Seven soldiers were killed.

De Duitse Majoor Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer, gekend als 'the night ghost of St. Trond' was verantwoordelijk voor het neerhalen van de Lancaster. The German Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnauffer, known as 'the night ghost of St. Trond' was responsible for taking down the plane.
