This is a taller gray marble memorial marker located among an area of standard white marble grave markers in a section at the far back side of the Fort Smith National Cemetery. The inscriptions on the left and right sides of the marker are:
Brig. Gen.
A E Steen
CSA
Killed at
Prairie Grove
Dec 7, 1861
(on the opposite side of the memorial)
Brig. Gen.
James McIntosh
CSA
Killed at
Pea Ridge
Mar 8, 1862
(below this is the following)
The Unknown
Confederate Dead
The inscription on the memorial stone for Gen. McIntosh faces the front of the cemetery, that of Gen. Steen, the back of the cemetery. Nearby are the grave markers for Brig. Gen. Steen and Brig. Gen. McIntosh and all around are markers with the inscription, Unknown Confederate Soldier(s) on them.
