Pinky Williams (1918-2001) was an ordinary man with a gift for cycling which he pursued until he was 70. Although never a professional cyclist, Pinky won 560 cycling awards and several Scottish titles during his life.
Engraved on the base of the sundial are Pinky's son's summing up of his father's philosophy: Sport does not build character, it reveals it. And sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can. Other engravings commemorate some of Pinky's achievements, including breaking the record for cycling from Glasgow to Dumfries and back again at the age of 53.
