This sculpture of Hippocrates (the Father of Medicine) is located in a beautifully landscaped and shaded plaza in the Health Sciences complex. The plaza is used by the medical and pharmacy students to study, take breaks, or just eat their lunch.
Hippocrates is standing on a pedestal, and is easily spotted from any building around the plaza.
Hippocrates was born in Cos, Greece, 460 B.C. and became a Greek physician known for making bold changes in the view of illnesses in patients. Hippocrates believed that illnesses had a rational and physical explanation, as opposed to the superstitious belief at the time that sickness was caused by possession of evil spirits, etc.
He felt that the patient needed to be thoroughly observed, and observations recorded in order to have a systematic method for diagnosing what was wrong. The condition of the patient was to be carefully observed, and the patient questioned in order to help obtain an accurate diagnosis.
Hippocrates wrote several medical books, but several in the series of books written near that time are known to have been written by other physicians.
