This, I am told, is a new bus station, constructed a little to the north west of the provincial capital, Phonsavan City. The city and province are famous for the "Plain of Jars", megalithic jars scattered across the landscape to the south of the city.
The station is off a main road leading into the city, set back ~50m. Not overly elaborate in design, a central covered area with a ticket counter at back. On either side vendors selling food, drink and so forth. Tickets are sold here, but I suspect most tickets are pre-purchased from agents in the town. As with most developing, Buddhist and communist countries, the locals are highly entrepreneurial and every shop is an agent for everything.
According to the timetable buses depart here for the national capital of Vientiane, north to the tourist spot of Luang Prabang, and to Vietnam.
There are tuk tuks here ready to whisk you into the town proper, and I suspect that local buses (covered trucks) perform the same function, but far cheaper. If the photos look like they were taken during heavy rain, they were—the rainy season.
