The quote is from Henry Brooks Adams' book, The Education of Henry Adams, which won the 1919 Pulitzer Prize in the Biography or Autobiography category.

Henry Adams, 1838-1918 was an American journalist, historian, academic and novelist who is best known for the book the aforementioned quote is from.
