PeoplesBank has opened a new branch in West Springfield that meets the U.S Green Building Council for LEEDS Gold certification. It is the only LEEDS Gold building in West Springfield and one of only two bank branches in the state to get a Gold designation.
Acccording to the CEO of PeoplesBank, Douglas A. Bowen, achieving this designation added about 10 percent, about $200,000, the the cost of this one year old building. He calculates that the bank will recover these funds through energy savings. The building has passive solar heating, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and energy efficient windows and lighting.
A large portion of an existing bank building was reused in the construction of this branch. This reduced the need for landfill. Also, locally produced materials were used whenever possible. The landscaped grounds are designed to catch and absorb rain water
runoff, thus reducing the amount of ground water discharged into the nearby Connecticut River.
