The lighthouse was completed in 1859, the date over the door is 1856. The tower is of cast iron, which was supplied by the Norwegian Navy's shipyard in Horten and lined internally with 90,000 bricks.

The lighthouse has a range of 17.8 nautical miles (about 32km). It is lit between August 10th and April 26th. It is not needed at other times due to the midnight sun.
