The Texas Mining District above Gilmore was discovered in the 1870’s but significant development did not begin until 1902 when the ore was shipped by wagon to a smelter at Nicholia (about 15 miles to the ESE) until the smelter burned a few years later. The mines remained closed until 1910, when the Gilmore and Pittsburgh Railroad reached Gilmore and shipment of ore to a smelter in Montana began. Prosperity continued until the depression began in 1929 and the mines began to close. After the closing of the mines the railroad continued operations until 1940 when it closed down and Gilmore became a ghost town.
