This dam was built in 1958, with the aim of providing irrigation to the agriculture in the southwest coast of Portugal.
The project was prepared by the company Hidrotécnica Portuguesa, and executed by Moniz da Maia & Vaz Guedes.

It's a pleasant place, very close to the touristic coast of Algarve but still, it's quite and feeling remote. There is a fine cafe restaurant near the dam and it's a great area for a stroll along the banks of the reservoir.
