The Town of Chincoteague was incorporated in 1908 and is on Chincoteague Island in Accomack County - one of two counties (Accomack and Northampton) that comprise the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The county seat and location of the Accomack County courthouse and jail is about 30 miles/45 minutes south of Chincoteague Island in the Town of Accomac. Island police officers used to lock-up their prisoners in the old Town of Chincoteague jail instead of leaving the island for a couple of hours to go to the Town of Accomac to appear before a magistrate and lock-up prisoners there.
The date and cause of this facility closing is unknown, however Federal and State rules and regulations, along with correctional facility certifications, insurance regulations and staffing expenses have forced many local holding facilities to close over the years.
Today, the Town of Chincoteague uses the Old Town Jail for other purposes such as the Broadband Network Project. A regional jail in Northampton County houses most of the prisoners for the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Some prisoners are still housed at the jail operated by the Accomack County Sheriff's Department.
