In front of San Francisco Church is a bronze statue of Padre Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary who led the Spanish Mission to California. He established California Mission Trail, from Baja California to San Francisco starting in 1768.

The Mission Trail is well known in Southern California. Highway 101, The Pacific Coast Highway follows much of the original route, El Camino Real. Many of the major cities started as Spanish Missions. He established 11 missions: San Blas in Baja California, San Diego de Alcala, San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, San Antonio de Padua, San Gabriel Archangel, San Louis Obispo de Tolosa, San Francisco de Asis, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara de Asis, and San Buenaventura.
Padre Junipero Serra was born in Petra and educated in Mallorca. Blessed Junipero Serra was beatified in 1988.
The statue shows him with Juaneño, an Indian boy. There is a similar statue in Havana, Cuba and a different one by Ettore Cadorin is in Washington DC, one of two statues representing the state of California in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol.
