This analemmatic sundial is a raised oval 4m x 6m, with a raised date or zodiac table. This gives the two dimensional sundial some sculptural presence. Stand on the date straddling the centre line of the date table. Your shadow tells the time. The raised ellipse and zodiac to add to the human gnomon height. Note the date and zodiac symbols.
Note angled sunrise and sunset lines working with seasonal markers to the east and west. The lines crossing under the large circles marked EST (east) and OEST (west) show the direction and time of sunset and sunrise. Stand on the center of the circle and look one way, over the date on the date line to see where the sun rises or set through the seasons. Look the other way and follow the line to see the time of sunrise and sunset.
This Seasonal Marker concept was introduced to sundial designers in 2001 by Roger Bailey of Walking Shadow Designs and has been adopted by many designers of analemmatic sundials around the world. This sundial shows that Rafael Soler invented the idea several years earlier
