The Shaker community at Hancock, MA were early adopters of automotive technology. An REO T-6, which is on display in the brick garage building was an early favorite. According to the informational sign in the garage this model had many advantages for the Shakers.
"The 1923 REO T-6 four door sedan exhibited here today is identical to the one owned by the Shakers. REO is an acronym for Ransom E. Olds, the founder of Oldsmobile. The Shakers were partial to the REO, as they were utilitarian - a good durable car available at a fair price. Additionally, because of its size the REO was able to accommodate a number of Shaker Sisters and Brethren."
The Hancock Shaker Village, a National Historic Landmark, is located on Route 20 in the southeast part of Hancock, MA. The Shakers are a religious order which believed in pacifism, celibacy, and communal living. Hancock Shaker Village's mission is to preserve Shaker craftsmanship and culture.
The Hancock Shaker community began in 1783 and reached its peak membership in the 1840s. The community gradually dwindled to about 50 members in the early twentieth century. Today the buildings and grounds are maintained as a living museum under the direction of a board of trustees.
