The Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital operated from 1931 to 1998. The average capacity was between 500 and 800 people. During that time a number of patients died and the bodies were not claimed.
The grave markers of this cemetery only contain a number. However, a circular cement monument with brass plaques list the names and the date of death for each of the graves. There are 924 listed on the plaque. The initial grave markers were made of cement. The later ones look to be of cast iron.
At the top of each of the plaques with the names is part of the following quote: "The souls of The righteous are In the hand of God, And there shall No torment touch them...For God proved them And found them Worthy for Himself."
The entrance to the cemetery is unmarked. There is a brown box with some information regarding the Monmouth County Park System. The entrance is across the street from the main entrance to the closed hospital. It is a dirt and stone road that will take you to the cemetery.
The hospital and cemetery have been visited by "ghost hunters". The hospital grounds are surrounded by a fence and there is no trespassing and those who do not heed the warning may be fined $1,000. The cemetery is open to the public during the daylight hours.
