One of only three salt mines in the world that are accessible to tourists, the one under Hutchinson, Kansas houses a salt museum. Access is only by high speed elevator, and the exhibits are located in salt rooms left by the pillar and room method of salt mining.
Everything else that goes in the mine is also left, so you see piles of trash and equipment that dates back to the 1920's when mining first began. There is also an exhibit on the oldest living organism ever found, 250 million year old bacteria spores found inside a salt crystal.
