This cobble and pebble beach is a hidden gem. Located on the shores of Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota, most folks don't know of it's existence. In fact, after years of traveling Minnesota's famed North Shore I didn't know about this beach until this year.
The beach is near the taconite processing plant in Silver Bay and is hidden down a service road, past mining equipment.
The Beach is called Black Beach because it literally was black. The rocks and shoreline were coated and the normally crystal clear waters of Lake Superior were dark and murky. Local fisherman complained and what become a major legal landmark case, the former Reserve Mining was forced to clean up the lake. For 25 years they had been dumping tailings into the pristine lake. Now nearly 30 years after the legal case the water is clear and only stained remnants remain.
The beach is bordered by impressive rock formations. You can take a swim but beware, Lake Superior is cold year round and dangerous. This beach also appears to be a party site as there are remnants of campfires and beverages here and there. Nonetheless, it is beautiful.
