MARKHAM - Great Valley, New York - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

This U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey triangulation station (designated MARKHAM) is located on the top of a hill in Raecher Hill State Forest. The station is set in a 10x10 concrete monument that is 6-7 inches above the level of the ground. The station is in the middle of an area that has been forested in the last few years, so the approach is challenging. See recommendation for getting to the mark below.

The mark is in excellent condition - and is stamped with the date: 1935. There are two reference marks that are purported to be nearby, however they were not searched for/recovered at this time. As described by the NGS, the reference marks were in/along a line of planted pines - which due to the logging that has occured in this area - makes it extremely difficult to identify that land feature. As a result, the reference marks may have either buried, obscured and/or destroyed.

Recommendation for getting to this station: Head north on Raecher Road until you arrive at a yellow state forest gate (which is about .34 or so east of the station). If the gate is open continue on at the ability of your vehicle, otherwise park. Once past the gate, continue on the road that heads north for a couple hundred feet, then sharply turns west. Take this until you get as close as you can to the station (I didn't take this route, but it may only be a couple hundred feet from the road). From there into the woods! If you try and bushwhack from the area of the yellow gate, you'll have a uphill battle full of fallen trees, berry bushes and a varied assortment of thorned vegitation. No fun son. :)
