Hill Top was Beatrix Potter's first purchase in the Lake District. She had stayed in many houses to holiday with her parents and brother. It was whilst staying locally she asked to be told when somewhere nearby came up for sale. Hill Top farm and land became available. But rather than evict John Cannon who had been living and farming at Hill Top, she built an adjoining house for him. Beatrix hired him to continue running the farm.
There followed many other farm purchases in Troutbeck, Borrowdale, Yewdale and more around Sawrey. All bequeathed to National Trust. Overall the National Trust control over 25% of the Lake District.
Hill Top has a limited entry system, especially on wet days. Get a ticket and wait for your entry time.
