The Peabody Opera House, formerly known as the Kiel Opera House, is a historic, 3100 seat theater in the heart of downtown St. Louis. Originally opened in 1934, the Peabody Opera House stage has welcomed some of entertainment’s greatest performers, including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Following a $78.7 million restoration, this historical gem has been restored to its original splendor and undergone state-of-the-art upgrades.

Flanking the grand entrance are granite brickwork with etched quotations on either side. The quotation on the left side of the Market Street entrance of the Opera House is from a speech by German-born United States journalist and political leader Carl Schurz:

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT WILL BE THE MORE SUCCESSFUL THE MORE THE PUBLIC OPINION RULING IT IS ENLIGHTENED AND INSPIRED BY FULL AND THOROUGH DISCUSSION --- THE GREATEST DANGER THREATENING DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS COMES FROM THOSE INFLUENCES WHICH TEND TO STIFLE OR DEMORALIZE DISCUSSION

CARL SCHURZ

This quotation is excerpted from an address by Carl Schurz in New York, March, 1899. It was given at a banquet that night in his honor. (visit link)
