The project is located in Duncan's Memorial Park, an almost 8-block long strip park along US 81 in the middle of town. The park is filled with all types of monuments, not just veterans' memorials.
This project was started in 2008 to honor this country's most recent veterans. According to an article in the "Duncan Banner," Dalton Matthews got the idea for this project because his father had served in 1990-91. To raise money for the project, he and other Scouts sold tiles of some sort to veterans. [http://duncanbanner.com/local/x434656570/Finishing-the-job/print]
Unfortunately, the monument is marred. There is a lovely quote on it: "You can only protect your liberties in this world by protecting the other man's freedom. You can only be free if I am free." The quote is attributed to Clarena Darrow. A Clarena Darrow may have existed at one time, but she's not the person who said that; it was Clarence Darrow, famous attorney.
That mistake has Team Blakelylaw absolutely baffled. Given all of the people who had a part in this project and who had to approve it, how could the mistake have been overlooked? If they caught it late in the process, how could the City of Duncan allow such a public mistake to continue its existence. If no one has caught the mistake, what a sad, sad comment upon the state of our illiteracy.
