The Illinois quarter design depicts a young Abraham Lincoln within the outline of the state. Twenty-one stars border the coin, signifying Illinois as the 21st state to be admitted into the Union on December 3, 1818.

A farm scene symbolzing the state's agricultural industry appears on the left side of the coin. To the right is an outline of the Chicago skyline dominated by the distinctive tapered shape and twin antennae of the John Hancock Center.

Although not the tallest structure in Chicago, the John Hancock Center is easily spotted amongst the Chicago skyline because it is closer to the Lake Michigan shoreline and stands alone as a skyscraper along Chicago's North Michigan Avenue as opposed to the skyscaper-dominated Loop neighborhood - Chicago's central business district and birthplace of the modern skyscraper.

When measured to the top of its antenna masts, the John Hancock Center stands at 1,500 feet (457 m). The building is home to offices and restaurants, as well as about 700 condominiums and contains the highest residences in the world. This skyscraper was named for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, a developer and original tenant of the building.

Visitors to the John Hancock Center can either dine in "The Signature Room on the 95th Floor" or partake in the the Hancock Center's observation facilities on the 94th floor.

The waymarking location is along the North Avenue Beach - which is VERY popular during the summer months.
