This is one of two dams that impounds water in the dry bed of the Salt River to form Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona. The dam is constructed of a strong, flexible, rubber-coated fabric tube that is afixed to a concrete base slab by clamping bars and anchor bolts. Dam operators can control inflation and deflation of the tube. An automatic safety device ensures tube deflation during floods.
Each section of dam is an individual air bladder about 240 feet long, weighing 40 tons, and is more than one inch thick. The dam is 16 feet high and sits on a three foot base. Air pressure in the bladders is maintained at 6 PSI and can be controlled individually.
