EN: The Strasbourg monument stands in Basel at the south side of De Wette Park near the railway station Basel SBB and is a reminiscent of the Franco-Prussian War.
1778 civilians, mainly women and children, were evacuated from Strassburg and taken to Switzerland in 1870 when the city was besieged and bombarded by the German army.
In 1895 the French Baron Hervé de Gruyer donated this monument to Switzerland. The Federal Council decided to erect it in Basel. The monument was created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who was most famous for the Statue of Liberty in New York. The inscription at the side of the monument says: "A la Suisse hommage reconnaissant d'un enfant de Strasbourg 1871 (To Switzerland, a homage deeply thankful from a child of Strasbourg 1871)".
DE: Das Strassburger Denkmal steht in Basel an der Südseite des de Wette-Parks beim Bahnhof Basel SBB und erinnert an den Deutsch-Französischen Krieg.
1870 wurden mit Schweizer Hilfe 1778 Zivilisten, vor allem Frauen und Kinder, aus dem von der deutschen Armee belagerten und beschossenen Strassburg evakuiert und in die Schweiz gebracht.
1895 wurde vom französischen Baron Hervé de Gruyer dieses Denkmal gestiftet und der Schweiz geschenkt. Der Bundesrat bestimmte Basel als Aufstellungsort. Das Denkmal wurde von Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi geschaffen, der vor allem durch die Freiheitsstatue in New York berühmt wurde. Die Inschrift auf dem Sockel sagt: "A la Suisse hommage reconnaissant d'un enfant de Strasbourg 1871 (Der Schweiz eine dankbare Huldigung von einem Kind Strassburgs 1871)".
