Three inch bronze afixed to a pipe. Top number appears to read 1257, but I'm not clear what that stands for. Bottom number reads 1962 which could be the year placed. Found at the trailhead of the North Country National Scenic Trail off Rt 346.

This is found at the trailhead of the "Certified North Country National Scenic Trail". If you were to follow this trail for 1.1 miles you would reach the NY border, where the trail becomes part of the NY Conservation Trail / Finger Lakes Trail.

The FLT celebrated it's 50th aniversary this year (2012), and the Foothills Trails Club celebrated the 50th aniversary of the Conservation Trail. The southernmost portion of the Conservation Trail is also the westernmost portion of the Finger Lakes Trail. Is it coincidence that the year this marker was placed is exactly the same year the Conservation Trail / Finger Lakes Trail got its start?

The elevation at that location is presumed to be 1370 feet or higher, so the top number (1257) does not correspond to elevation. It might represent a section of the Allegany National Forest, but this whole area is fully within the National Forest, so it isn't an "outside" boundary marker.
