The house Chimneys used to host magnificent gatherings until, twenty years ago, a rare diamond was stolen and a servant went missing. Lord Caterham, the owner, has been persuaded by George Lomax, an ambitious politician, to host an evening party to impress an Austrian Count, Ludwig von Stainach. Miss Marple is invited to the gathering as the companion of Lord Caterham’s daughter, Lady Virginia Revel. Virginia must decide during the gathering whether to accept an offer of marriage from George Lomax, or follow her heart and marry Anthony Cade.

When the Count arrives, Lomax explains that the Count will do a great iron ore deal with the nation, providing he can buy Chimneys from Lord Caterham. Caterham agrees and the house is sold.

During the night a security guard is attacked. The house is woken up to investigate. A very loud shot rings out and the Count is found dying in a secret passageway. Anthony Cade is cradling the dying Count, and becomes an immediate suspect. He tells them that he was using the passage to visit Virginia and that he had seen smoke from one of the chimneys on his way to the passage.

Investigations reveal a coded message from the Count. The Count himself turns out to be a musician that was at the party twenty years ago when the rare diamond went missing. On investigating the family vault at the local church, the missing servant is found in one of the family caskets. Miss Marple eventually divines that Anthony Cade is not the murderer and that it is Lord Caterham who murdered both the servant twenty years ago and the Count. Apparently the Count had been Lord Caterham’s wife's lover, and that Caterham staged the diamond robbery to implicate the Count. The servant disturbed Lord Caterham and had to be got rid of.
