Znojmo City fortification system consisted of several belts of walls and ditches, only pierced by the four city gates.
The walls were reinforced with plenty of towers, both circular and prismatic.
Znojmo obtained the right of fortification in the 13th Century and the city walls of Znojmo were continuously improved to reflect the current level of military development.
The 16th-century artillery changed warfare dramatically and the following centuries saw no use to maintain the Znojmo City Walls.
After the Napoleonic Wars the long neglected fortifications were partially, but luckily not to great extent, demolished.
