Eliphalet Griffin was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire in 1751. He served in the American Revolution in Captain James Norris's company, Colonel Enoch Poor's regiment joining from Deerfield. He settled in Alfred following the war and became a blacksmith. His farm was near Shaker Pond where he accidentally drown during winter of 1798 when he broke through the ice.
