Prior to meeting here, followers of John Wesley, who had convinced many when he spoke at nearby Flookburgh in 1759, had assembled in a stone barn near the shore. Later they met at Berners Close, before Alexander Brogden of Holme Island gave this land for the church to be built. His wife laid the foundation stone which reads
quote:
This stone was laid by Mrs Alexander Brogden Sept 11th 1874. Ernest Bates, Architect, Manchester.
Ernest Bates designed the church in a Gothic style, and used sandstone dressing with snecked limestone for the walls with local slate for the roof. The adjoining Sunday school was similar.
