Wat Yai (big wat), as the this Wat is informally labelled by the locals, is an impressive temple to see and visit. The Wat is located on the Nan River, near the city centre. It contains the usual range of buildings, plus a busy market, the provincial museum, and a variety of historical and Buddhist artefacts in the extensive temple grounds. It is a popular spot with the locals.
The temple is widely known in Thailand as it houses a golden sculpture of the Buddha known as the Phra Buddha Chinnarat. This depicts the Buddha in the posture of overcoming Mara. A stone inscription dates the Buddha to the time of King Mahathamaracha Lithai of the Sukhothai dynasty, seven centuries ago. This image is used as the provincial seal. Unfortunately, my visit coincided with a Buddhist holiday, the wat was crowded and a ceremony was taking place in the temple, thus I was unable to take a photograph.
The waymark is located at the main entrance. Entry is free, though a donation is always appreciated.
