King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden commissioned a ship, the Vasa, to be built. From 1626 to 1628 workers toiled away. It is said that the King wanted to have the biggest and best ship around, so he kept adding things to it - much to the dismay of the ship's designers. The designers told him that his changes would make the ship unseaworthy, but he didn't listen. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Vasa sunk not far from the harbour. The Vasa was salvaged after 333 years on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The ship is adorned with more than 700 carved sculptures.

The ship was placed in a museum, the Vasamuseet, in which the humidity is well-controlled. The museum holds more than the ship; it has signs in many languages (including English) that tell the story of the ill-fated ship. A film about the Vasa is shown every hour. The film is shown in a different language every hour including subtitles in another language. (For English speaking travelers, if the film was either shown in English or with English subtitles every other hour.) There are also guided tours daily.
