The Razorback was one of the four submarines launched at the Portsmouth Navy Yard on January 27, 1944 and soon began her service with patrols against the Japanese in the Pacific. All told she was on active duty for some 53 years, in both the US and Turkish navies. Then on March 25, 2004 the Turkish Navy officially transferred her to the USS Razorback/TCG Muratreis Association, which is now the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum Foundation and a year later she began her role a museum.
Admission to tour Razorback is $6.00 for adults, Children / Seniors (62 and older) / Military - $4.00. Hours are: Wed - Sat 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sun - 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum website is an excellent source of information on the Razorback. Interestingly enough, the Razorback was not named after the University of Arkansas mascot, but rather for a species of whale found in the far southern reaches of the Pacific Ocean.
