Much of the rail track in east London is carried on viaducts that are supported by arches. However, the arches over roads became a problem as road traffic increased in size. The arch meant that ant tall vehicles had to use the centre of the road when passing under the bridge. To overcome this problem the arches across roads were removed and girders used instead. This not only gave a consistent clearance but there was also a slight increase in the clearance height.

The arches that carried the railway between roads were put to use. The open ends were closed off and light industrial businesses were set-up as they could handle the noise and vibration of trains passing overhead as they were probably making as much noise themselves.
