Das Robert-Schumann-Denkmal befindet sich im östlichen Teil des "Schillerparks", südlich der Moritzbastei. Es ehrt den Komponisten und Musikkritiker Robert Schumann (* 8. Juni 1810 in Zwickau; † 29. Juli 1856 in Endenich).
Der ca. 3 m hohe Obelisk mit quadratischem Grundriß besteht aus poliertem grauen Syenit und wurde vom Leipziger Architekten B. L. Grimm entworfen. Der Obelisk trägt auf der Südseite ein rundes Bronzemedaillon (Durchmesser ca. 0,5 m), das ursprünglich von Heinrich Natter (1846-1892) geschaffen wurde, aber in den Jahren 1913 und noch einmal 1980 erneuert werden mußte. Unterhalb des Medaillons befindet sich die Inschrift "R. SCHUMANN".
Das Denkmal wurde anonym von Dr. Philipp Curt Fiedler (1840-1919) gestiftet und der Stadt Leipzig geschenkt. Am 8. April 1875 wurde es - als weltweit erstes Denkmal für Robert Schumann - eingeweiht.
The Robert-Schumann Memorial is located in the eastern part of the "Schiller Park", south of the Moritzbastei. It honors the composer and music critic Robert Schumann (* 8. June 1810 in Zwickau; † 29. July 1856 in Endenich).
The approximately 3 m high obelisk with a square base is made of polished gray syenite and was designed by the Leipzig architect B. L. Grimm. The obelisk bears on the south side of a circular bronze medallion (diameter 0.5 m), which was originally created by Heinrich Natter (1846-1892), but had to be renewed in the years 1913 and again in 1980. Beneath the medallion is the inscription "R. SCHUMANN".
The monument was donated anonymously by Dr. Philip Curt Fiedler (1840-1919) to the city of Leipzig. On 8 April 1875 it was inaugurated - as the world's first monument to Robert Schumann.
