On Boston's Common, near the Massachusetts State House, is a tree that has a sign that identifies it as an elm. That's the one full word you can see on the sign, because the tree has enveloped all but the center of the sign.

The tree is located along a sidewalk that parallels Park Street, but in the common. The tree is a relatively young tree (50 years or so) on the western side of the walk, about 100 ft from the stone stairway in front of the state house.

The sign is facing this sidewalk, about head level. The tree has covered all four edges of the sign and is now headed for the center. In addition to 'Elm,' there are portions of other letters currently visible that give clues on what type of tree it is. From the clues and the Internet, I have determined that this tree is an Ulmus glabra (Huds) Scotch Elm.

The sign is located below a part of a tree that has been cut off, so I don't know if it will continue to envelop the sign. We'll have to see.
Type of Tree: Scotch Elm
