The Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library was built in 1937 as a gift to the city from Dr. and Mrs. Harvey D. Thornburg in memory of Mrs. Thornburg's father, Louis B. Goodall. The Goodall family long associated with textile mills in Sanford also has a long association with the library in the Sanford. Thomas Goodall, Louis's father, first built a library building the town in the 1870s which was located on State Street. At that time there was little interest in having a library and the building was used for other purposes for several years. Finally in late 1890s their was an increased interest in having a library and the Sanford Library Association was organized on June 18, 1898. Thomas Goodall, the association's first president, allowed the library to move into his State Street building which has been built years before. The library remained at the State Street building until 1937 when this building was construct.

The current brick building in a Colonial style was designed by Sanford native William O. Armitage. Once the building was completed it was given to the City of Sanford in memory of Louis Bertrand Goodall, a prominent citizen, businessman and has served in the U.S. Congress 1917-1921. - information from library website
