While the current building dates from 2004, the Hays Public Library began as a subscription library in 1900. In 1911 a Carnegie Library was erected, only to be torn down with the erection of a new building in 1968. This current building draws on the original Carnegie design for its distinctive entrance appearance.
This is an outstanding library that not only serves the citizens of Hays, but is also one of the top library's in the country. It has an excellent Young Adult Department, Visual and Performing Arts Gallery, and its Kansas Room is an outstanding collection of Kansas history.
